Strikers Raul and Fernando Torres have both been left out of the Spain squad to face Romania next week. There is no place Real Madrid skipper Raul despite a recent upturn in form, while Torres has paid the price for a sluggish start to the season.
Raul was dropped in September for the first time since breaking into the Spanish squad ten years ago, and not even a return of five goals so far this season has persuaded Luis Aragones to restore him.
Torres - long seen as Spanish football's great hope - has hit the target just twice this season and is struggling to fulfil the potential he showed when he burst onto the Liga scene in 2002.
Instead the striking positions go to Valencia team-mates David Villa and Fernando Morientes, while there is a first call-up for Deportivo La Coruna's Angel Arizmendi.
Real Madrid's on-loan Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes also misses out, while there are further surprise call-ups in the shape of Javi Navarro, Alberto Lopo and David Silva.
La Seleccion take on Romania in a friendly match in Cadiz next Wednesday evening.
